The original 1939 design was for A39 size lenses. The design allows the polarizer to be attached to the lens using a compression clamp. The clamp is attached to the hood/polarizer using a set screw that enables the filter to swing 180° to be in front of the viewfinder window allowing the appropriate amount of polarization to be set visually.
